Ryan Murphy is a writer, director and producer. He is behind projects like Nip/Tuck, Glee, American Horror Story, Pose and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. He was won multiple awards including 6 Emmys.
It was his acceptance speech for the Carol Burnett Award at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards that demanded he be included in this list.
The Golden Globe Awards have two awards that are announced ahead of time. The Cecile B Demille Award and the Carol Burnett Award. This means Murphy would have had several weeks to prepare for what he was going to say.
He took the stage and accepted the award from Billy Porter. He then went on to recognize Porter, Michaela Jae Rodriguez, Niecy Nash, Matt Bomer and Jeremy Pope.
He didn’t simply mention their names in terms of thanking then but told stories of how these LGBTQ actors were told to deny who they were if they wanted to be successful. Murphy provided mini bios on each one and spoke of what they overcame to make their mark in Hollywood.
Murphy, also a member of the LGBTQ community, spoke of when he was growing up, he didn’t see people on television that represented who he was, and he wanted to do something about that.
Not just in Hollywood but in all forms of life we can see people who become successful but forget about those also on a similar journey. In this act, in this one acceptance speech, Murphy showcased the fact that he wasn’t satisfied with his own success but in making sure when he climbed the proverbial ladder, that others were able to follow in his footsteps. It was a true sign of guidance and mentorship.
Ryan Murphy has long been recognized as a great writer, director and producer but on that night, on January 10, 2023, he stood out as a leader and that is why I find him fascinating.
