Ghosted – Movie Review
April 21, 2023

Synopsis: Cole falls head over heels for enigmatic Sadie, but then makes the shocking discovery that she’s a secret agent. Before they can decide on a second date, Cole and Sadie are swept away on an international adventure to save the world.
Director: Dexter Fletcher
Stars: Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Adrien Brody

One of the biggest criticisms of the last James Bond film, No Time to Die, is that Ana de Armas did not have more screen time. While only in one scene it was enough to give those who weren’t familiar with her the opportunity see what many already knew; the Academy Award nominated actor lights up the screen and often steals the scenes she is in.

Limited screen time is not an issue for de Armas in this film she co-stars with Chris Evans. Evans plays Cole and he works at a market where he has a somewhat awkward but sweet meet-cute with Sadie. (de Armas)

The two decide to go for coffee and they embark on a wonderful first date. The chemistry between the two is infectious and as they are on this adventure one will long for someone to look at them the way these two look at each other. In another project we could be on our way to a wonderful romantic movie but this isn’t a romantic film as much as it is an action adventure comedy.

Sadie has a job that takes her out of town quite often and after she departs on her next trip Cole is instantly missing her. He sends her some text messages…ok he sends her a lot of text messages and they go unanswered. With the help of some technology Cole is able to decipher where Sadie is and in a ‘grand romantic gesture’ he decides to go the United Kingdom, where she is, to surprise her.

In his mind he hasn’t been ghosted by her, she’s probably just ‘busy’ with work. Off to England he goes in the hopes of finding her, but he ends up getting kidnapped. Turns out these baddies think he is ‘The Taxman’. Now he is being held and about to be tortured. The things a man will do to woo a woman.

Turns out sweet Sadie is a CIA Agent and now Cole is thrust in the middle of an assignment she is working on.

This movie, from Apple TV+, is entertaining but not without flaws.  While enjoyable at times the film is somewhat over the top. Sadie is a trained CIA agent, and she is perfectly comfortable handling herself in dangerous situations and before long Cole is right along side her, with no training, fighting off these baddies as well…ok.

It’s difficult to be a fan of Marvel and Star Wars films and then wax poetic on a film that doesn’t feel realistic but here we are. The chemistry between our two leads is great but unfortunately the overall screenplay doesn’t do it justice.

Part of me wishes this had just been a romantic film as that had potential. Perhaps the producers wanted to inject some of that de Armas spirit from No Time to Die but it doesn’t work here.

The action aside the script doesn’t work as it goes beyond goofy. Academy Award winner Adrien Brody is introduced as a baddie, but his performance seems mailed in.

This movie is ok but not a top selection for your time. Ana de Armas deserves a great action film and I thought Ghosted would be the one. I was wrong.

Grade: C-
