I have stepped into a movie theatre over 200 times in 2016. I have seen all types of movies and I proudly present my favourites of 2016. The list will start off with the 10 Best Films of 2016, in alphabetical order and then I will present my favourite movie of the year.

This movie deserves to be in the conversation with the Hughes era. Rarely does a film deal so effectively with teen angst.

From Paul Verhoeven comes this film that deals with a woman in the aftermath of being physically assaulted. Isabelle Huppert may not have been well known to North American audiences but that is about to change.

Jeremy Saulnier’s movie about a punk rock band fighting for their lives creates a level of terror that I haven’t felt in a long time.

This movie came out in the first half of the year but I cant forget how amazing Jon Favreas telling of this Kipling classic was.

Damien Chazelle will light up your senses with this musical. He has created a beautiful movie that definitely stands out from the rest.

Lion
With similarities to Slumdog Millionaire this film, based on a true story, was one of the most powerful films of the year.

Jessica Chastain’s turn as a lobbyist was one of the best performances of the year.

There really should be more discussion about this amazing film. Tom Ford is an extremely talented director and this movie will stay with you.

This German film has been wowing audiences and I will join that list. It is one of the most original looks at father daughter relationships we have ever seen.

Barry Jenkins has created a vision that needs to be seen. With a $5 million budget and a 25 day shoot he showed that you don’t need a $100 million to make a movie that will be remembered for years to come.
